America has struggled with immigration since its founding, with mixed success. But President Barack Obama may be on the verge of wasting whatever progress has been made when he unilaterally implements his plan to grant legal status to millions who are currently living here illegally.

But the president recent announcement of pushing his plan until after the November elections, a political move that meant to prevent Democrats from facing an electorate opposed to blanket amnesty.

The president’s willingness to go it alone on immigration confirms those fears. In fact, even before Obama announces his plan, statistics show that deportations are down 25% from last year. In 2014, the government is on pace to deport the fewest number of illegal immigrations since 2007, lending credence to the idea that the president is relaxing enforcement in the absence of congressional action.

Thus, with Obama’s executive overreach, he has almost certainly killed any chance at bipartisan action on immigration anytime soon.
