Lost Your Green Card? Do You Need a New Medical Exam?

Losing your Green Card can be stressful but the good news is, you probably don’t need to repeat your entire immigration medical process.

One common question we hear is:
“If I lost my Green Card, do I need a new Medical Exam?”
Let’s break it down clearly.

What Is Form I-90 Really For?

If your Green Card is lost, stolen, damaged, or expired, you’ll usually file Form I-90. This form is meant for replacing or renewing your Green Card not for reapplying for permanent residence.
That means, in most cases, you will not need a new I-693 Medical Examination when filing form I-90.

Do You Need Another Medical Exam?

Usually not.
Your Green Card Medical Exam, including health checks and vaccinations, was already done and approved when you became a permanent resident.
If you’re only replacing a lost or expired card, USCIS typically does not require you to see a USCIS Approved Doctor again.

But there are exceptions. If USCIS notices a gap in your records or has questions about your health status, they might request a new I-693 Medical Exam. This is rare, but it can happen.

Only See USCIS Certified Civil Surgeons

If you're ever asked to retake your exam, make sure you visit a Doctor Approved by USCIS. Only a USCIS Certified Civil Surgeon can complete and sign the Form I-693 properly.
Choosing the right Immigration Doctor helps you avoid delays, rejections, or having to redo the exam again.
