• What Is The Purpose Of Taking The Immigration Medical Examination?
  • The Immigration Medical Examination is an important part of the entire US immigration process.

The purpose of taking the Immigration Medical Examination is to determine whether the applicant has an inadmissible health condition.

HOW DOES THE USCIS BASE ITS FINDINGS?

USCIS makes the admissibility determination based on the civil surgeon’s findings.

    WHAT THE CIVIL SURGEON DOES

USCIS determines the admissibility based on the Civil Surgeon’s findings of the Immigration Medical Examination.

    1. The Civil Surgeon determines whether the applicant has any Class A or Class B medical conditions.

    2. The Civil Surgeon records this information on Form I-693.

    3. The Immigration Officer reviews Form I-693 as part of the determination of admissibility.

WHAT THE IMMIGRATION MEDICAL EXAMINATION ENTAILS

The Immigration Medical Examination comprises of:

    1. A comprehensive review of the immigration visa applicant’s medical history, with hospitalizations, institutionalizations for chronic conditions, serious illnesses or disabilities, psychoactive drug and alcoholic use, and chest X-ray and treatment records if the visa applicant has history suggestive of  TB.

    2.  A review of any other records available to the physician (which may be indicative of the applicant’s state of health)

    3. A review of systems to determine the presence and severity of any Class A and B conditions (we shall discuss Class A and Class B medical conditions soon!)

A physical examination, including an evaluation of mental status and all relevant diagnostic tests.
